Mr. Gitonga has held several posts on energy and climate change in his career. He is currently working as a Regional Sustainable Energy and Environment Specialist in the Nature, Climate and Energy Team at the UNDP Regional Hub in Amman, Jordan. In this role, he oversees work on sustainable energy in the context of sustainable development across the Arab region, including work on energy and environment in fragile and crisis contexts. Before joining the Regional Hub, he worked as Global Lead and Policy Advisor on energy coordinating and providing Programme support, policy, and technical advice at the global level in UNDP HQ in New York. He has dedicated his career to spearheading actions towards sustainable energy and environment in the face of climate change-induced shocks, disasters and in the context of sustainable development. He has extensive experience in programming, coordination and policy support at community, national, regional and global levels. He has contributed to supporting energy and climate change activities in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and Commonwealth of Independent states and Arab states. He has a strong track record of providing support to governments, regional entities, the private sector and the civil society focusing at ensuring sustainable use of energy for growth, healthy environment and to uplift the livelihoods of the people while building resilience of communities. He has published over 40 thematic papers on the topic of energy, climate change and sustainable development.
